That last entry was so long that I’m feeling I need something punchy this time. And when I think succinct, to-the-point, and no-nonsense, I think of a bulleted list. So on my third full day in Oaxaca, here are a few of the floaters of my metaphorical boat:
- Edith, proprietor of Casa del Fresno, who on my arrival picked me up at the airport & gave me a big water cooler-size jug of water & a map of town showing the closest market and internet cafes.
- The eight feisty ladies in my TESOL course, from Jane (a former DeKalb County Councilwoman (that’s Illinois, folks) turned investment banker) who thought we’d all be boring 3rd grade teachers, to our trainer, Annie, who wears totally funky green horn-rimmed glasses and lives one month out of the year in a collective house on Vashon Island (that’s Washington state) when she’s not traveling the world.
- The zocalo – which is the main square of town. And I thought the public spaces in Toronto were great! This is a huge city block sized square full of benches and gorgeous trees, lined by restaurants and shops, completely pedestrian, with lots of activity at all hours. The only downside is that it’s not a great place for a pick-up Frisbee or soccer game. But if you want your shoes shined, man, you’re in luck!
- The weather. (Okay, I’ll try not to mention it again.)
- Avocados.
- This little candle I bought at the local supermarket. (that’s right. I’m gonna let it shine… ☺)
- Being surprised by beautiful things that are probably written up in the guidebook but that I don’t know about because I haven’t really read the guidebook very thoroughly. (Now I get to look at it and find out what I saw.)
- Gene Kelly. Just ‘cuz.
Hopefully the slideshow of my new digs will get uploaded okay so you can all now see how I’m livin’.
And here's a little quiz for you readers: On my street (and nearby) there are many "marmolerias" - which, I'll give you a hint, are not marmalade factories or marmot huts. But they are indicative of a landmark near which I live. What might that be? I'll send something special (maybe electronically) to the one who guesses first.

The Teatro Macedonio Alcalá? Or something else with lots of marble?
the best tamales I had in Mexico were in Oaxaca... they had some kind of herb in them and were sold by the main market. and they were even veggie, which isn't so common
I agree with the marble idea. Maybe they're a tombstone stores. Do you live near a graveyard?
Gene Kelly always makes my day too.
