Precious, no? Alex and Violette at a garden party: A study in contrasts.
Okay, now onto other news. Yesterday was the first day of all-day sunshine since I arrived. I made a list of the fun and amazing things I saw during the course of the day:
- Bald eagles flying over the freshly cut alfalfa field next to the farm (The rodents are easy to catch after the tractor comes through.)
- Navy parachuters falling from the sky. (Couldn't think of anything further from the experience of dropping into a war zone than descending on a peaceful Whidbey field on a clear blue 75 degree day with mountains and water all around.)
- Mt. Baker towering above Penn Cove just before sunset
- A momma and baby deer walking down the street in Coupeville at twilight
- A teenage Boy Scout in full uniform greeting me as we passed on the sidewalk. Something about it was just so wholesome.
- Seeing how much the plants change in just a few days. From planting to harvest, the squash should only take about 30 days!
- And also seeing how beautiful all the veggies look after we harvest them, clean them, and put them into baskets for the CSA shareholders to pick up. Yesterday we had: artichokes, spring onions, snap peas, Napa cabbage, garlic scapes, salad greens, chard, and radishes.
Our all-woman crew has grown this week because Valerie has two young friends visiting - Ruthie and Ellie. They have been checking the chicken coop for eggs and logging the production every day. They also make delicious things like chocolate chip cookies and ice cream made with goat's milk (from Luka's goats)! So we're happy to have them around. Friday night we will be putting on a variety show, which Theresa inadvertently volunteered me to coordinate. So we'll see how that goes.
In the meantime, check out some initial photos of the farm on my Flickr site. I still need to get some pics of the fields where the veggies grow, as well as pics of all the lovely ladies tending this patch of earth.
